After that, you will need to learn how to use social bookmarking sites like Digg to increase the visibility of your articles. Also involved is building a network of people within the bookmarking communities who will help you promote your original contributions with the click of a button.

Next, you will need to familiarize yourself with the major social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter. That includes knowing what to say and how to say it so you don't come across as an annoying or aggressive marketer. By using sites like these, you will be able to leverage a movement or news story in order to achieve maximum results for your efforts.

Then you will need to learn how to set up a blog and how to optimize it so that it can be found easily on the search engines. Whether you set it up on SquareSpace, WordPress, or even Blogger, you will need to know what to include so that you are not wasting your time.

Finally, you will need to learn how to create video marketing pieces to upload to the major video sharing sites like YouTube, MetaCafe, and Veoh. Vidoe marketing is quickly becoming the premier marketing medium on the internet, and you do not want to be left in the dust on this one.

When you go back into Google and type in these specific search terms, look at the number of search results up in the corner. With less competition, you will have a greater chance of getting your blog on the first pages of Google than when using the broader key word, "dog".

Facebook Dropped an Investor Worth A Billion

Facebook users grown in huge number, ranging from university students down to high school students and because of their million users, other social networks tried to buy the company. It started when Zuckerberg worked with Sean Parker the former co-founder of Napster. Parker introduced Peter Theil to Zucherberg who then become the Facebook's first investor. The investment amounted to $500,000.

The knowledge that Facbook opened its door for investors spread like a light gas in town, attracting other social networks to buy Facebook company. Friendster was the first to make an attempt to buy Facebook in mid 2004, offering Zuckerberg an amount of $10 million in exchange of company ownership. Like a precious antique possession in an auction hall, the bid for Facebook ownership rose up when Zuckerberg turned down the offer of Friendster.

Following the attempt of Friendster to acquire Facebook, in September 2005 Accel Partners provided an additional fund to the latter amounting to $12.7 million at $100 million valuation. A month after, Facebook add up a glimmering photo sharing feature which hightened its popularity. This another episode of magnanimous success in putting the network flashy attraction to users paved the way to receiving an additional funding from its previous investors Peter Thiel and Accel Partners. Meritech Capital and Greylock Partners joined the Facebook investors and put up a fund of $25 million. This deal was appraised to worth $525 million pre-money.

In March of 2006, Viacom tried to purchase ownership of Facebook at $750 million but its fate ended up same way as with the Friendster's attempt.

When Facebook opened its membership to anyone with email address, the following summer of 2006, finally Yahoo tried to acquire ownership of Facebook to an amount of $1 billion. Although this offer was turned down, previously it was reported that Zuckerberg made a verbal agreement with Yahoo in selling out the ownership of Facebook. This verbal agreement became null and void when Yahoo eventually lowered down it offer from $i billion to $800 million due to the sudden drift of their stock price. At such face, Yahoo couldn't resist acquiring the Facebook which drove it to made another offer as their stock price come to an equilibrium. This time, Yahoo offered Zuckerberg $1 billion which was instantly turned down due to a bad deal reputation Yahoo had previously committed. Zuckerberg instantaneously earned a very notorious label being "the kid who turned down a billion". From then on Facebook remained a privately owned network by the Facebook company.

Blue Host - Why Bloggers Switch to BlueHost and WordPress

Right now, we run over ten WordPress blogs on our one BlueHost account. All of our blogs have their own domain names. We also have an unlimited number of email addresses ending with our domain name. And, we are in full control of the look and feel of our blogs.

But, it wasn't always like that.

In the beginning... we were broke. We wanted to blog, but we didn't want to pay for anything. So we signed up for a free blogger account. Ten months later, we decided to get more serious and we switched to a self-hosted WordPress blog powered by BlueHost.

Here are the 3 big problems we had with free blogs:

1. You have that navigation bar at the top that often comes with free blogs. For example, Blogger and Xanga both do this. It helps users to find other Blogger or Xanga blogs, but does it really present the professional look that you're going for?

2. Your free blog only has a few basic features. For example, WordPress offers a free platform, but you can't install any of the plugins to add extra features like top-commentator plugins, polls, survey, etc.

LiveJournal offers a free platform, but their basic accounts only have a few of their features turned on.

If you want more services, you can get a plus account, but then you agree to let LiveJournal run their ads on your blog. If you want to turn their ads off, or buy your own domain name to use with your blog, then you need to have a paid account ($3 per month).

3. You're not allowed to make money with your free blog. Lots of people blog because it's fun. But, we also try to see if we can make a little money on the side. After all, there are lots of ways to make money through blogging: google ads, affiliate links, sponsored posts.

The only problem is that a lot of the free blogging platforms specifically say that you can't run those things. For example, the free WordPress.com platform doesn't allow you to run ads on your site. Same with Xanga.

The big exception to this is Blogger. Blogger is owned by Google and they make it easy to run Google Ads on your blog. But, even then, companies like PayPerPost that pay your to write sponsored posts will often reject your blog if you are running a free account at typepad, xanga, blogspot, livejournal, wordpress.com, or vox.

We switched to BlueHost for the following 3 reasons:

1. BlueHost offered a free domain name for life when you signed up for their web hosting package ($6.95/month).

2. BlueHost offered free domain privacy registration.

3. You can have an unlimited number of domains hosted on your BlueHost account. This was important to us because that way we could experiment with a lot of different blogs and each blog would have a different domain name.

4. Finally, you can create install WordPress on your blog with the click of a button. If you run a blog on WordPress.com, you can't do anything. But if you install the free WordPress software from WordPress.org on your blog, you can run ads, make money from your blogs, and install all of the features (plugins) that you want. BlueHost let us install as many WordPress blogs as we want on our BlueHost account with the click of a button.

Bottom Line: If you want to experiment with blogging, then get a free blogging account. If you want to experiment with making money through blogging, then get a free Blogger account from Google. But, once you decide that you want to step up your money making experiment, then you should consider getting a Web Hosting account somewhere and running Wordpress from it.

Nothing new here. Bloggers have been doing this for years. Once you have the post written it's a breeze to submit it to article directories so other site owners can use the content. Now your blog post just went viral!

Blog Post To E-Book

Another way to increase the value of your work is take the content and write an e-book. Yes, even more viral. It was quick and easy since the content had already been written.

Random Tips

Using a simple HTML rotator I was able to set-up random tips taken from the article to display on my site. It took about an hour to copy and paste each tip into it's own section.

Cross Promotion

This worked once for me but probably won't work twice. I posted to a different blog about the steps I took with the original blog post, much like I'm doing in this article.

Other Ideas I Could Have Used

I could, and still may, build a blog widget so the random tips can be added to other blogs as free content - and viral site promotion of course.

It would have been a very simple task to require subscription to a newsletter in order to download the ebook.

I could have expanded my promotions even further by writing and submitting press releases.

Another idea could have been to break the content into parts for a free e-course using an autoresponder to build another list.

I don't want to forget about video! I could have read the post on video or even recorded it for an audio download.

I'm sure a cool interview could have been worked out using the content.

I could have taken the time to include affiliate or product advertisements such as a few banners in the ebook.

I'm sure there are other ideas. Site promotion is limited only by your imagination.

Instead, cut long sentences into two shorter ones. As for the keywords, density should remain anywhere from 3% to 5%. Rankings start to fall when keyword density reaches 8% or higher.

Appealing Your Readers

Keep the content of all your paragraphs brief, factual and informative. When visitors view your page for the first few seconds, they will check if paragraphs seem easy to read and interesting.

Fat paragraphs and long sentences instantly result to low web site traffic and sales because not a lot of people truly have the time or patience. Do not be afraid of using quotations and placing sources like "according to..." as long as they are relevant to the topic. Quotations are actually appealing for readers.

My own foray into blogging started with the Self-Reliant Post. In my particular crash-course process of learning how to blog, I also learned about the things I shouldn't do. So, for those of you that want to blog in support of your sites, here are some things you should avoid doing, either accidentally or on purpose. Or, you can do them anyway, annoy the blogosphere, and get blacklisted.

Splogging

Spam Blogging, also known as splogging, is using your blog solely to generate links pointing back to your site and/or optimize content for ads. To get content, a splogger either machine-generates keyword-rich gibberish or steals content from another blog feed, article, or web site. Then they load it up with links and post it.

Don't do this, really. If you're going to blog and put links back to your site, be original. Answer e-mails from your visitors. Write about your thoughts. Respond to comments. Spin off threads related to the content of your web site or your chosen topic. But don't post a massive quantity of quick-and-dirty garbage text just so you can hang an ad off some optimized content. It will get you blacklisted, and in the case of plagiarism, possibly sued.

Spinging

Spam Pinging, or spinging, is when someone unnecessarily pings to force spidering by a search engine. This is usually machine generated to the tune of hundreds in order to trick a service into believing a blog is fresh all the time. This is extremely abusive, and the services that do ping are taking precautions against it now to insure pinging automation doesn't occur.

To avoid this one, only ping once when your content has changed. It's that simple.

Spam Commenting

Blogs come with comment links underneath their articles for the placement of comments by anyone who visits. Spam Commenting is when someone leaves a comment for the sole purpose of tacking a link onto a blogging page to benefit from its rank. This is rude to say the least, and another thing upon which services are cracking down. You can't even get away with this on the hosted blogs, because their web masters have control over whose comment gets left intact.

If you read a blog and want to comment, show some class and don't spam. If you have a real comment, post it. If you don't, don't just leave a link.

Yes, this is the Net. If something has been invented to legitimately make use of the Net, it's all but certain that someone's found a way to abuse it. This doesn't mean you have to be one of them. Blog abuse will hurt you in the long run, so don't do it.

Landing On The Right Affiliate Program

In my entry about how a site could make money, I have discussed a little about affiliate programs. And with the feedback I received from WomenXtra, requesting for some recommended sites on affiliate programs and banners, I thought I should discuss the two further on separate articles.

The first discussion would be on affiliate programs. I have mentioned before that this kind of programs work by “recommendation”:

1. You send a visitor/buyer from your site to an affiliated site.
2. Then your affiliated site will pay you.
3. And you earn money through commission basis.

All affiliate programs work the same, only that there are some that really pays well. However, you should also take extra precaution because there are also a lot of frauds on these programs.

Even though you do minimal effort on this kind of program, you could lose everything--- money, time, and traffic----- if you have been victimized by a fraud program. To avoid such loss, you should be properly informed about affiliate programs.

Here are the extra information you should know:

1. There are many affiliate programs out there---- some are free and some ask you to pay for membership--- but, just to stay out of risk, choose your affiliate from the roster of free-from-fees affiliates.

2. Join more than one affiliate program. This will enable you to compare one program from the other, and will very much track those who are frauds.

3. Analyze the affiliate’s system of payment:
- What is the mode of payment?
- When will the payment be issued?
- What is their minimum (traffic/visitor) requirement before they issue the payment?

4. Know the tracking system of the program and how long will your referrals stay on the program.

5. Be able to look for a program that offers a detailed statistics, which should be available for your viewing.

6. Know the people behind the “billing system”. If it is run by some billing company the better. Often times, if the billing system is handled by a third party, there is no fraud in the system compared to only two people who handle the system.

7. Find out more about the retailer and the products/services they are offering. It is better if you could also look for ways on how credible they really are by looking through their content, awards gained, other sites that link to them, testimonies and news about them, etc.

8. Know the percentage of your commission. Be able to compute all figures first before you sign up for them.

9. Rate your affiliate site from its contents to its navigation. Be able to see if the site is worthy for a visit and if it easy to use.

10. Know the hits per ratio of the program and if they also pay you the hits besides the commission.

On the plus side, you will probably make more sales since it is a newer item. On the minus side, you will probably have more competition because it is new and also there is the possibility that the program will go belly up sooner than with a program that has been established. many new programs fail in their first year or sooner. So promoting a new affiliate program is always a risk.

Finally, there is the ethical side of finding an affiliate program. Many, if you just read their sales page, are blatant pyramid schemes. Most of these programs will eventually collapse or be shut down. You have to go with your conscience on this one. You may make a lot of money on these programs at the start, but you'll be doing it at the expense of others coming in later on just before the wheels come flying off and many people end up losing their money. You really want to try to find a program that has a viable product or service that you can believe in. The program itself will have a better chance of surviving.

By following the above tips, you have a decent chance of finding an affiliate program that is just right for you.

Organizing the Internet Through the IP Address

Every web server on the internet is assigned a unique address called an IP (Internet Protocol) address. This address is much like a telephone number - a unique number that lets other computers connect to a specific server.

IP addresses are 4 bytes, or 32 bits. Each byte is called an "octet" and can be given a value between 0 and 255 so an IP address takes the form of 123.45.67.89.

Theoretically, 32 bit IP addresses support more than 4 billion unique addresses but in reality the number is much less. Certain ranges are reserved for particular uses so the number of available IP addresses is limited.

Web hosts get around this limitation with shared hosting and virtual servers. To avoid having to use a single server for each web site, shared hosting lets a single server host many web sites. Each site has the same IP address (the one assigned to the server itself) but a unique domain name (eg. mydomain.com).

The current IP address numbering system is version 4 (IPv4) and there is a new system called version 6 (IPv6). This new version will allow for 128 bit addresses which will greatly expand the number of available addresses. Because the internet is currently built around the IPv4 standard, it will take a number of years to upgrade the infrastructure to support this new format.

Shared hosting helps to solve the problem of a limited number of IP addresses for an ever-expanding number of website, but we also need to consider that every computer connected to the internet is also assigned an IP address.

To avoid having to assign a unique IP address to every computer that connects to the internet, most internet providers use system called dynamic IP. They are given a range of available addresses and when you connect, you are assigned one of these numbers. When you disconnect, that number goes back into the "pool" and someone else will get it when they connect.

This dynamic IP system is one of the reasons it's not usually feasible to host a website on your home computer. Because your address can change any time, it is difficult to keep your domain and your IP address properly associated.

4. Trusting automated article distribution software programs. There are a lot of software programs promising a solution to the rather tedious requirement of having to submit your articles to many directories. Sadly, most of these programs do not serve their purpose well, the reason being is that article directories often change their systems to dissuade the usage of such programs. For the many article directories in the World Wide Web, article submission programs pose a lot of potentials for abuse which will be detrimental to their own businesses. Hence, there is no standard article distribution software that is built to last. Manual submission of your articles is still the best. If you feel that this is too laborious a task for you, you can always subscribe to manual submission services that are widely available in the market today. Or you can get a freelancer to do the task for you.

5. Submitting unmodified PLR articles. With the sheer amount of membership sites and offers of PLR packages these days, it’s tempting to submit them as they are. This will be a costly mistake.
